What is
FaceBook?
Recently, we have heard people ask us whether we have a facebook account and
that we should check their facebook for more information on something. On
discussion shows, radio presenters may often be heard saying that for more
information on the topic, listeners can continue the discussion on their
facebook. What is this facebook anyway and how does it work?
Simply put, facebook is a website that helps people to keep in touch with
their friends, family or people with common interest. A brief background may
help us understand how this website evolved. Zuckerberg, a Harvard student,
is the founder of the facebook website. Originally this website allowed
registrants from the Harvard University only. But in time, membership was
open to other universities, high school students and latter everyone above
13 years of age.
How does the website work?
The first step in using this website is to register oneself; name, surname,
email, DOB and password. Once this is done, the next important step is the
provision of personal profile information. This information will include
among others; sex, interests, contacts and education/work. This is the
information the system will use to intelligently locate possible friends,
family members, colloquies or groups for you.
Once the registration and profiling process is done, one is almost ready to
start using facebook. It is possible now to invite people, registered in
facebook, to be your friends. Invited people will be sent emails notifying
them of your invitation. If they accept, then a network of other friends is
opened to you. One will start seeing the friends of a friend, who could
possible be shared friends with you. One can also join open group networks
or request to be a member of a particular protected group. One may be
introduced to another group network related to the current one, and so on.
This is where the real social network begins.
After the above stage, one can start communicating with friends by posting
messages, uploading pictures, responding to discussion topics, etc. Through
joining facebook, most people have been addicted to its use. They have been
able to keep in touch with friends much easier and better than before. Also,
they have been reconnected with people they never thought of meeting again.
